The hikes to one of the currently 13 habituated mountain gorilla families start in four different places – in Ruhija, Rushaga, Nkuringo and Buhoma. The starting point is related to the gorilla group, to which the visitors will leave. To keep the behaviour patterns of the animals unchanged, a visit to a gorilla family never takes more than an hour. The group size is limited to eight visitors. In addition to mountain gorillas and various species of birds, at least 14 snake and 43 reptile species and more than 300 butterfly species live in the Bwindi National Park. In the region, travellers have the chance to learn more about the culture of the Batwa. The Batwa are also referred to as forest people and are a pygmy tribe that was originally in the rain forest home. Special tours can be booked to bring visitors closer to the history of the Batwa.

In the central region of Uganda, the only surviving rhinos in the country are currently being observed. Here lies the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary – a 7,000 acre rhinoceros sanctuary.

Earlier, the black rhino and its northern subspecies, the white rhino were widespread. Today, they are considered eradicated in Uganda. In the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the rhinos are now to be bred again, so they can be later reintroduced in the Kidepo Valley National Park and Murchison Falls National Park. This is the aim of an EU-funded project that started in 2000. Visitors are offered Rhino tracking guided by a specially trained ranger. In addition to longer stays, day trips are also possible from Kampala.

KAMPALA
Kampala has been the capital of Uganda since 1962 and today, with more than one million inhabitants, is the largest city in the country. Kampala offers the amenities of a modern African city. These include a good selection of culinary delights, a variety of shopping opportunities, live music and the latest movies.

Travellers can also visit, among others, the National Museum, the National Theater and various handicraft and art markets. There is also a cultural show in the Ndere Center three times a week.

ENTEBBE
Entebbe is located 36 km south of the Ugandan capital Kampala on a peninsula on Lake Victoria and was during the colonial era until 1962 Uganda’s capital. The colonial era is reminiscent of many buildings from this period, which can be visited during a tour of the city.

In Entebbe worth a visit to the botanical garden. This is located directly on the shores of Lake Victoria. The garden is an attractive mix of native forest and horticulture. Especially for bird lovers this is an exciting destination. Four kilometres outside the city is Uganda’s international airport, making it an ideal stopover destination for arrivals and departures.

Jinja
In 1862, the explorer John Speke declared the Ripon Falls to be the source of the Nile, making Jinja a tourist attraction. Today, Jinja is the center for adventure tourism in Uganda.

Adrenaline junkies can take white-water rafting trips on the Nile, bungee jumping, jump from a height of 44 meters, dive into the Nile car or enjoy a day of stand up paddle boarding. But also in this part of the country the culture is not neglected. Guided village visits are held to bring visitors closer to the everyday life of the villagers and local agriculture. Jinja is only two hours away from Kampala. The length of the recommended stay depends entirely on the plans and requirements of the travellers. For rest and relaxation is certainly enough for one night. Adrenaline junkies should spend at least three nights in the city on the White Nile.
